  • notes   Syn.: Caloplaca pyracea, Lecanora pyracea (Ach.) Nyl., Lecidea pyracea (Ach.) Schultz, Placodium pyraceum (Ach.) Anzi, Pyrenodesmia pyracea (Ach.) E.D. Rudolph. - Habitat: In the vicinity of a farmhouse, grassland – pasture, mowed once per year, not fertilized; calcareous, skeletal, colluvial ground; open, sunny, dry place; partly protected from direct rain by tree canopy; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 600 m (1.970 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: bark of a small, living Juglans regia. - Comment (pertains to pictures in the Flickr album Athallia pyracea): This taxon is taxonomically a difficult one. Often it has been (is) considered as a part of Caloplaca holocarpa group and/or named Caloplaca pyracea. The current name according to Index Fungorum Athallia pyracea was established only recently in 2013 (Nordic Jl Bot. 31(1): 36). It is a common species growing on all kinds of substrata and easy to spot in spite of small apothecia, less than 1 mm in diameter. - Ref.: (1) V.
