location East side of Pinnacles National Monument (San Benito County, California, US)notes Growing in an open sandy wash surrounded by chaparral, with a few scattered oaks. These plants key well to Nemacladus secundiflorus in the JM2 treatment by Nancy Morin. Salient key characters leading to species are: Plants erect; ovaries partly inferior in fruit; stems below reddish-brown; corolla white, midveins of lobes pink, tube present and cylindrical. Determining the variety is less clear. Using my thumbnail (16mm) as a reference, I estimated (photo-metrically) the corolla tube to be 2.7 mm, the lobes 2.4 mm, and the inflorescence bracts 2.7 mm. Also, the few non-whithered leaves I found appeared slight oblanceolate. From the JM2 descriptions, this seems to lead to N. s. var. secundiflorus. However, there are a number of herbarium records from the general area determined as N. s. var. robbinsii, and I could find no such records for N. s. var. secundiflorus. Perhaps clarity here isn't to be expected here...as varieties, by their nature, can tend to grade into one another. keywords: Nemacladus Pinnacles
