  • date of photo  Sep 27, 2011
  • location  Horseshoe Canyon. Canyonlands National Park (Wayne County, Utah, US)
  • notes   These images, created by Native Americans on exposures of Navajo Sandstone, are representative of the Barrier Canyon style that preceded the arrival of the Fremont people and the Ute in this area. Some of the characteristics of the Barrier Canyon style include human figures that are larger than life-size with vacant-looking or missing eyes, usually lacking appendages, and decorated with vertical body markings. These pictographs are probably 1500-2000 years old. Horseshoe Canyon is also referred to as Barrier Canyon.
