  • notes   Crossing the road at dusk. Though the road looks dry, this area is often covered with fog and the road here is usually wet with fog-drip. I always move these guys off the middle of the road, as bicyclists sometimes race down this road and I've seen newt and snake fatalities :-( . BTW, I'm actually not certain whether this is Taricha granulosa or T. torosa. I've read that T. torosa usually has eyes that bulge a bit outside the outline of its head when seen from above. I don't have such a top-view shot, but upon close examination of these photos (especially the last of the 5), it appears the lower jaw would extend beyond the eyes when seen in vertical projection. Also, this newt has dark (rather than light) lower eyelids...another character of T. granulosa that I have read about. Unfortunately, I didn't gently tap this individual's back to see it strike its 'defensive pose', or else I could have looked at whether it held its tail straight (T. torosa) or curled at the tip (T. granulosa). But my best guess is T. granulosa. If an expert can tell me otherwise, I'll be glad to know (and change the posted name).
