| Reviewer's comments: | | | | "E-mail from Patrick Coin, coinpg@durhamtech.edu, Durham Technical Community College: This photo is of two pairs of Beetles mating. They are of family Cantharidae, probably genus Cantharis. The biology is interesting--the males appear to be dead! One reference describes how the males of this genus may give their own body as a nuptial gift! See: The Encyclopedia of Land Invertebrate Behaviour, By Rod Preston-Mafham, Ken Preston-Mafham, MIT Press, 1993, ISBN: 0262161370; page 11. That reference has an illustration of this cannibalistic behavior in the European Cantharis rustica." |
