location Angeles National Forest, elevation 1036 m (3400 ft.) (Los Angeles County, California, US)family Bufonidaehabitat Chaparral Shrubnotes Small, brownish, rough, warty toad. Little to no pale dorsal stripe, snout blunt, oval parotoid glands, and pale tubercles on rear feet. Below whitish. About SVL 58 mm (2¼ in.). At night exploring isolated streams and intently listening for calls revealed no toads. However, later, investigation of what appeared as a crushed snake on the nearby roadway sadly revealed a crushed Bufo californicus. Following this event, exploration of the road revealed a living specimen. Warm, rainless night.photo category: Animal - Amphibian
