notes The CalFlora database lists 112 species of Eriogonum in California (there's a much larger number of taxa if one also counts all the varieties). Of all these Eriogonum species, only three are dioecious: E. incanum, E. marifolium, and E. diclinum. This dioecious trait is mentioned in many identification keys and can lead to confusion for a novice who might naively expect pistillate flowers to lack stamens, and/or staminate flowers to lack pistils. Those parts are not necessarily absent in these three species, rather they have lost their functionality and become vestigial during the process of speciation from their synoecious eriogonoid progenitors. Thus dioecy is manifested here by pistillate plants having flowers with vestigial (infertile) anthers, and by staminate plants having flowers with vestigial (infertile) ovaries. For more detailed images, with labels indicating vestigial and fertile parts, see pistillate inflorescence here, and staminate inflorescence here.camera Shot on a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f14, 1/125, ISO 200, using a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
