location
Belfair, WA (Mason County, Washington, US)notes I was pulling some Hieraceum alba in my yard and saw a bird scramble across the ground. At first thought I believed it was wounded or diseased (Recently found a dead, on its back - feet up, chestnut-backed chickadee in my driveway. Bird virus?). Further investigation proved to be a nest on the ground with a clutch of 4 eggs. At a glance I figured the bird to be an Oregon junco. After checking my field guide to Nests, Eggs and Nestlings to North American Birds, C. Harrison, I was correct. This is a typical nest made at the base of a fern and somewhat covered by brush. The fern is a sword fern - Polystichum munitum.camera Kodak ES Z760
