Castilleja applegatei ssp. pallida (Brewer's ind.paintbrush) |
Castilleja linariifolia (Desert Paintbursh, Wyoming Paintbrush) | This is the color form of C. linariifolia found fairly frequently on the eastern slopes of the central-southern Sierras. While distinctively colored, this is morphologically identical to the typical reddish form. While the important characters aren't visible in the foreground plant, they are in the rear plant. Note the calyx cleft more deeply in front and the corolla, which hangs out"and is widely spreading from the calyx cleft. Also note the long corolla & long beak, neither of which are characteristic of C. applegatei var. breweri/ssp. pallida. Finally, I have seen and collected this form of C. linariifolia at Sonora Pass! (Though breweri/pallida may occur there as well.) |
