Thamnophis ordinoides (Northwestern Garter Snake, Mountain Garter Snake) |
Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi (Northwestern Garter Snake, Mountain Garter Snake, Valley Garter Snake, Valley Garter Snake) | Species misidentified. Location information (i.e., Madera County, California) is well outside of the known range for T. ordinoides. The extent of this species range in California is limited to Del Norte, Siskiyou and possibly Humboldt Counties. Additionally, the three distinct light stripes that can be seen on this specimen are atypical for T. ordinoides. Although the distance from the specimen in the photo makes absolute identification difficult, this specimen is most likely T. sirtalis based on appearance and location (other possibility is T. elegans). |
