Picea engelmannii (Engelmann Spruce) |
Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa (Alpine Fir, Subalpine Fir) | From location of photo, and colour of needles, shape of tree and needles, and purple upright cones at the top of the tree, this is clearly not Picea engelmannii, but is Abies lasiocarpa. |

Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa |
Picea engelmannii (Engelmann Spruce) | Agree with photographer's ident; Picea cones are erect at first, only becoming pendulous toward maturity; also some of the cones are terminal on the shoots, a frequent character in Picea but not found in Abies; branch structure is also Picea. |
