08/23/2002 Timothy D. Ives  taxon changed Picea engelmannii (Engelmann Spruce) Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa (Alpine Fir, Subalpine Fir)
The photo is clear enough, but I downloaded it and enlarged it to take a thorough look. The photo is definitely of a tree in the genus abies, not Picea. Then, looking at a tree distribution map of Colorado where the photo was taken, and the colour and shape of the needles and the purple cones, I come up with Abies lasiocarpa, or Subalpine Fir

06/22/2007 Michael Frankis  taxon changed Abies lasiocarpa var. lasiocarpa Picea engelmannii (Engelmann Spruce)
Agree with photographer's ident; Picea cones are erect at first, only becoming pendulous toward maturity; shoot, leaf structure and bud scales are also typical Picea.
