05/08/2017 Eric LoPresti  taxon changed Abronia villosa var. villosa (Desert Sand Verbena) Abronia turbinata
These are interesting plants, but I feel pretty certain they are turbinata, for two reasons: (1) because of the small, almost circular leaves and small, light flowers (compared to typical villosa), and (2) turbinata is known in the Tehachapi mountains and 5200' is awfully high for villosa.

HOWEVER, these two hybridize readily in the lab and this could be a naturally occuring hybrid (or a pop. with lots of introgression). I'm going to try to check this population out this year.
