09/18/2002 James Morefield  taxon changed Chaenactis douglasii var. alpina Chaenactis douglasii var. douglasii (Douglas' Dustymaiden, Dusty-Maidens, Hoary Chaenactis)
This is the dwarfed montane form of var. douglasii sometimes called var. montana. The consistently branched capitulescences place it (perhaps arbitrarily) in var. douglasii rather than var. alpina.

02/09/2004 Dean Taylor  taxon changed Chaenactis douglasii var. douglasii Chaenactis douglasii var. alpina (Alpine Dustymaiden)
: "I ammend herein Jim's assingment of this photograph - the plant shown is a polycarpic perennial, and corresponds to the taxon named C. pumila E. Greene; which in my opinion is distinct, very very rare, and poorly known- being insofar as I have seen material narrowly endemic to the Sonora Pass and Sweetwater Mountain region. The complex merits study." Absent this, I would assign this and other polycarpic material to var. alpina sensu lato, although Dorn Madrono 35 161-162. 1988 would restrict var. alpina to the Rocky Mountains; since var. alpina remians on the CNPS list, using the epithet alpina for these high alpine forms, which more probably correspond to the concept of var. montana, is proper.
